I have a predicament. I have the opportunity do summer school this summer and get the last few credits I need to skip Junior year or I can spend summer having fun and all that instead. If I skip Junior year, I'll graduate a year early at 16 and be at college by 17 (Summer birthday) but I'm really not sure if I want to rush into college. I have the chance to move out early if I do but at the same time I'm not sure I'm ready to leave home yet. Does anyone have any advice about this? I know there's a bunch of people on here who've finished high school and college and stuff and I'm too scared to ask my parents their opinions because even though they'll let me go to college early they still think of me as their little kid and will tell me I shouldn't. I might be overthinking this whole thing but real life is right at the door and I don't know what to do.

hey! this seems like something only you and your family can decide for sure and I don't know all of the details of your situation but I can try to help! In my opinion, your teenage years are a really rare time where you get to have more responsibility and be treated more like an adult, but you still don't have to do all of the challenging adult things yet. A lot of personal growth and maturing happens during the years of 16 and 17 and that growth is really important for your future. If things are unsafe or you have a real reason to want to get away from home then that's one thing, but if you're just finishing high school early for no particular reason I'd recommend waiting! Most people feel nervous about leaving home and going to college but they do generally feel ready for the next step in their life. Think about how you feel about it but since you're already young for your grade, it seems like it might make most sense for you to do your Junior year and enjoy your summer. Maybe you can try taking on more responsibility in a different way, like getting a part time job and saving up some $ for when you do go to college! Of course this is just my opinion and only you and your parents can know what's right but I hope that helps!

Hi there! I went to college at the age of 17 and although it is tough, it is so worth it. Unless you have any set in stone plans for the summer, you should go to summer school. It may feel like a drag in the moment, but once it’s over you will be so glad you did it. There are plenty more fun summers to be had, and you will get to enjoy them more because you’ll be ahead of everyone else academically. I say go for it and don’t get too hung up on being ready for college. No one is ready for college, it’s just one of those things you gotta jump into.

I was planning to get a job this summer as I'll finally be legally able to but I also live in the middle of redneck territory Colorado so it all depends on if I could get one. I think what I might do is take one class over summer so I can catch up in math but also get a job to make money and save for college. Another big factor for me is the debt that comes with college. I've accepted that I'm going to end up in debt and it's inevitable and I've come to terms with that but I figure if I have an extra two or three years to actually work compared to my peers that I'll be able to pay off more of it sooner.

I say go for it and don’t get too hung up on being ready for college. No one is ready for college, it’s just one of those things you gotta jump into. My school is online and has been since it's founding in 2001 so summer school is online as well. If I do take summer classes which I'm thinking I likely will, I'll be taking Geometry B and Biology A which will help me get "on track" with the rest of my peers. I'm only half a credit away from being classified as a senior anyways so I'll end up a Senior next year whether I aim for it or not since my school allows kids to graduate and go up to the next grade at the end of the first semester if they qualify. I'm honestly kind of leaning towards going for it though, as you said it's worth it and you were in a really similar situation. I could also take a gap year after graduating so I'll be out of high school but I'll be going to college with people my age. Either way, the colleges I plan to apply to all have family near by (Oregon State University has my grandfather right by and Michigan State (Or Uni of Michigan idk lol) has my aunt right by there) so I won't be alone either. My dad says he plans to follow me to college till I'm 18 which makes sense since I'll still be a minor and he uses me as a personal therapist so he's not ready to let go. I am leaning towards graduating early tho since I'm just so ready to get out of this damn town. My main thing for moving out as soon as possible tho is that whenever I'm away from my mom I tend to actually be a functioning human being (She and I are just too similar with personality and all that for our own good lol). Honestly your experience surrounding it is kind of convincing tbh. I do still have a year to decide tho so even though I'm leaning towards it now I may decide the month before that I'm not ready to let it go. Growing up is a fucking drag and takes forever and yet it's already almost over.
